TAKE ACTION - VOLUNTEER
Rocky Mountain Survivors Center (RMSC) depends on dedicated volunteers to support the mission of the agency. Volunteers range from high school students getting their first taste of cross-cultural work to experienced professionals providing pro bono services, and everything in between — and the work they do is just as diverse as they are!

Some of our ongoing volunteer opportunities are listed below. We also welcome your unique expertise and ideas for supporting RMSC and its participants in new and creative ways.

Volunteer opportunity What do these volunteers do?
Direct Service Volunteers RMSC is always in need of direct service volunteers, who work one-on-one with survivors.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Provide companionship and familiarize newcomers with American culture and the Denver area
  • Tutor survivors in English and/or basic literacy
  • Coach survivors on the public transportation system in metro Denver
  • Assist survivors with developing resumes and job skills
  • Provide childcare while participants are involved in RMSC groups and other events

Other opportunities may be available based on participant needs and volunteer interests.
On-call Transportation Volunteers RMSC is always in need of volunteers to provide transportation to our participants, many of whom need this assistance to get to events and appointments around the metro Denver area.

Any volunteers wishing to provide transportation to our participants must provide a valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance (property and liability).

English Practice Group RMSC provides on-going weekly English Practice Groups, where survivors can practice their English reading/writing and speaking/listening skills.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Lead and instruct weekly English Practice Groups
  • Prepare group materials
  • Assist by providing 1:1 assistance in the group setting
  • Serve as on-call substitute instructors for these groups

RMSC also needs volunteers to provide 1:1 English tutoring outside of English Practice Group (see "Direct Service Volunteers").
Special Event Planning RMSC sponsors and participates in special events for/about torture survivors.

Volunteers are needed to help coordinate:

  • Recreational events for survivors and their families
  • A recognition event on June 26th, the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
  • An annual Interpreters Recognition party
  • Events to raise community awareness about human rights issues

Volunteers are key to making these events successful. We welcome the skills and enthusiasm of those who like to make events happen!
Office and Administrative Support Volunteers are always needed at RMSC for office and administrative support. These volunteers are key to keeping everyday operations at the agency running smoothly, so that we can best serve the survivors. These volunteers also set the agency tone by acting as the "welcome committee" for participants and community partners through answering the phones and greeting people at the door.

Volunteers activities include: filing documents, answering phones, greeting participants at the front door, photocopying, and doing mailings.

Research and Resource Development Research volunteers at RMSC may:
  • Develop lists of community resources for survivors
  • Research and create "country profiles", which provide background information about survivors' countries of origin to RMSC volunteers and staff
  • Conduct community needs assessments
  • Assist with program evaluations

The knowledge, skills, and research of volunteers expand our capacity to provide needed, culturally competent services to our participants.
Fundraising and Program Development Volunteers are always welcome at RMSC for supporting grant writing, fundraising, community outreach, and program development. These activities keep the agency alive, so that we can achieve our mission of helping torture survivors create a new future.

We welcome your ideas and talents!
