The Mayor of Denver has proclaimed June 26th "Support Victims of Torture Day". View the Proclamation.

In addition to the UN Day Observance this year, RMSC is proud to announce our support for our sister organization, the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC), which is the world's only organization of, by and for torture survivors themselves. Because of the urgency of the issue of torture in today's troubling world, TASSC is designating June, 2006 as International Torture Awareness Month. Here are ways that you can be involved:

  • Endorse the TASSC declaration of June, 2006 as International Torture Awareness Month by sending an email to: AWARENESS@tassc.org
  • June 1, 2006
    1. Join the International 24-hour fast, and help organize the fast in your community;
    2. Present City Hall with a petition for your City to become a torture free zone. If you are interested in joining RMSC in these efforts, please do so by calling 303-321-3221, x206.
  • June 23, 2006 - National Call-in Day. Please call the White House, and see www.tassc.org for instruction and speaking points.
  • June 25th, 2006 - International Bell Ringing. We are requesting all members of the faith community that have bells in the buildings to sound those bells or other special instruments at 12 noon, Eastern Daylight Time.
  • Throughout June, 2006 - There are many other activities to pursue during this month, from local congressional visits, to panels of speakers, joint statements to the local press, radio interviews, letters to the editor, op ed pieces for the local paper, local library recognition of the month and possible speakers there, wear a loop of white ribbon during the week of June 26th to symbolize solidarity with all those who have been tortured and ask your friends to do the same, request that sermons and messages in your Church, Synagogue or Mosque focus on torture, offer assistance to survivors in practical ways (please be in touch with RMSC's Social Services Department at 303-321-3221, x208), organize a telephone campaign against torture, organize Candlelight Vigils on your campus and ask your school administrator to make an official statement against torture, organize weekly community meetings to see films or discuss readings about torture, organize a March, Vigil, or Post Card Campaign Against Torture, organize a Street Performance about torture, organize an anti-torture exhibition.
  • Attend and observe June 26th!
